No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Community members have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
