Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in armed forces or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to protect and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The video message appeared to trigger a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders React
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader issued a combined announcement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with great patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Officials' Defiant Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this country and swore an vow to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the founding principles and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation β regardless of party β should censure this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "There are current representatives of the federal government who worked together to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in casualties, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
