Larry Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their progress".
Summers, who once headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected his determination to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on this week to approve a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has stated he plans to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were made available with the public, the former official stated he assumed "total ownership for my misguided judgment to continue corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the people most important to me".
Career Background
The economist occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a researcher, announced that the economist was not connected with the organization.
He joined the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
