Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
