NFL Play-Off Picture: Key Deciders & Scenarios for the Final Week.

NFL teams in action
Pittsburgh battles Baltimore to determine the AFC North, while San Francisco and San Francisco meet for the #1 spot in the NFC.

As we head into the last weekend of the regular NFL campaign, only a pair of play-off spots are still up for grabs. Yet, far more is on the line, including the coveted #1 rankings in both conferences and several division titles.

The schedule makers have crafted a perfect finale, with the two remaining play-off positions to be decided in a pair of winner-take-all matchups.

Current NFL Play-Off Standings

AFC Standings

  1. Denver Broncos (13-3)
  2. New England (13-3)
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars (12-4)
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7) / Baltimore Ravens (8-8)
  5. Houston Texans (11-5)
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (11-5)
  7. Buffalo (11-5)

The winner of the Pittsburgh-Baltimore contest will secure the #4 spot and a home game in the wildcard round. Meanwhile, Buffalo and Los Angeles are locked in as wildcard entrants.

The Texans require a victory and a Jaguars loss to climb from fifth to the third seed. Denver will secure the top seed with a triumph, but a loss could open the door for the Patriots or the Jaguars to claim it.

NFC Standings

  1. Seattle (13-3)
  2. Chicago Bears (11-5)
  3. Philadelphia (11-5)
  4. Carolina (8-8) / Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9)
  5. San Francisco (12-4)
  6. L.A. Rams (11-5)
  7. Green Bay (9-6)

The NFC South is up for grabs by the victor of the Carolina-Tampa Bay game, granting them the #4 position. Notably, Carolina could still claim the divisional title even with a loss, contingent on other outcomes.

Green Bay are set at the seventh seed. The marquee matchup, however, is the clash for the #1 seed in the NFC between Seattle and San Francisco, with a week off and home playoff games hanging in the balance.

Understanding the NFL Play-Off Format

The top seed in each conference receives a crucial bye week and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

During the Wild Card round, the other six qualified teams compete: the second seed plays the #7 team, #3 plays #6, and #4 faces #5.

For the Divisional Round, the top seeds enter the competition, facing the lowest surviving team. The AFC and NFC championship games are then hosted by the best remaining team, highlighting the immense importance of securing that top spot.

Win or Go Home in the AFC North

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens (01:20, Monday)

This fierce grudge match comes to a head in the final game of the NFL season. With the AFC North and a postseason spot at stake, this is a true win-or-go-home situation.

Pittsburgh have been inconsistent all year, while Baltimore started poorly but are still in the hunt. Player availability may prove critical: Pittsburgh may miss star receiver DK Metcalf, while the Ravens' signal-caller their MVP QB is a doubt with a back injury.

Running back Derrick Henry might emerge as the x-factor for the Ravens in what promises to be a physical, defensive battle.

NFC West Showdown for the Top Seed

Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers (01:00, Sunday)

More than just the division title is at stake when Seattle visits the 49ers. The winner secures the NFC's top seed and the path to the Super Bowl that it provides.

This matchup pits an explosive San Francisco attack against a stingy Seahawks defense. Since quarterback Brock Purdy came back, the 49ers have been the NFL's highest scorers. Conversely, Seattle's defense is rated second best in the NFL.

Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold needs to cut down on mistakes that have plagued him this year. Whoever wins this clash gains a massive advantage for the playoff run.

The NFC South's Uncertain Finish

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Carolina Panthers (21:30 Saturday)

Neither team enters this game with strong form. The Buccaneers have dropped four straight, while the Panthers have squandered recent opportunities to secure the title.

For Carolina it's straightforward: a victory gets them in. For Tampa Bay, the scenario is more complex. Even with a victory, they require help from the Atlanta-New Orleans matchup to steal the division crown.

Three-Way Fight for AFC Supremacy

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans (18:00, Sunday)
New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins (21:25, Sunday)
Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos (21:25, Sunday)

Denver hold the cards for the #1 AFC spot. A victory over a L.A. Chargers team likely to rest key players gets it done.

Should Denver falter, the door opens for the New England Patriots. A New England victory coupled with a Broncos loss would give the #1 ranking to New England.

Jacksonville are the long shot. They require a triumph and losses by the Broncos and Patriots to pull off an improbable ascent to #1. More importantly, a Jaguars loss could allow them to be overtaken by the Texans in the division standings.
