Boxing has been a real slump this period, with a scarcity of big events and markedly reduced engaging contests than typical. The anticipation of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the struggling sport. The low-key appeal of both men is strengthened by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a championship opportunity. Yet neither is invincible. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, apart from three losses, he has been sent to the canvas repeatedly by multiple challengers. He consistently rises but Wardley punches with greater force than any fighter he's fought – with the omission of Wilder who appeared diminished of a knockout artist when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only began his boxing career when he was 20 years old, had no amateur boxing history and has perpetually battled doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is equally near to a shot at the title.

“This is the most important contest, right now, in the heavyweight category. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither of them was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he only had to wait for his chance. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He chose to box – and with Parker because it offers him an opportunity to accelerate his path.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not thinking about losing. I respect my opponent and his achievements and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a superior tier and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be the same. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has vast experience for a considerable period, with a numerous contests on his resume. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a significant time and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

The Final Verdict

But the general belief is that Parker will be too seasoned, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
