Space Traveler Shares Depression After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
