The Hornets Part Ways With Their Manager Following 10 Games and Bring Back Former Boss as Head Coach
The Championship side have made the move to end Paulo Pezzolano's tenure after only five months and 10 matches in charge, confirming the return of ex-manager Javi Gracia as his successor.
It is understood that the Uruguayan coach, appointed in the spring to take over from Tom Cleverley, along with his technical staff, were told not to take practice on Wednesday as speculation about his imminent departure mounted on Tuesday.
Pezzolano was summoned for a meeting where he became the 11th manager the club have let go since the beginning of 2020.
"The club is delighted to reappoint Javi," said the club's chief executive. "His passion, guidance and well-defined plan will help us build consistency, togetherness and positive energy.
"We believe many fans who hoped Javi had stayed on in 2019. With this talented squad, we are certain his know-how and qualities are exactly what we need now."
The returning manager previously led the team to the FA Cup showpiece for the second time in their history in that year, but was dismissed a few matches into the next season and last managed at Leeds in last year.
"Personally, the feeling I have in this moment is that I'm going back to a familiar place. It was the most enjoyable period of my career," he stated. "I have very good memories and we have unfinished business here. For us, it's another significant move in our career.
"It is a unique opportunity for us, and at the same time we are highly motivated for this campaign. If we are united, we are more powerful."
Pezzolano's sacking comes even after their win against Oxford United at their home ground on Saturday, which moved them to 11th in the Championship after a difficult opening that earned five points from the initial six matches.
The Uruguayan is reportedly left disappointed by the decision to sack him, having led Watford to a three-match unbeaten run that also included a home win over Hull City and a draw at Portsmouth, leaving them within touching distance off the playoff places.
Pezzolano joined soon after the end of the previous campaign with a strong record of guiding clubs to promotion in La Liga, South America and his home country.
