The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
