The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
England have opted for a 12-man selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the more likely decision.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.
But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
