UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
