US Authorities Report Apprehension in Thwarted New Year's Bomb Scheme Near LA

Federal agents declared on Monday that they had effectively disrupted a detailed plan to detonate explosive devices at numerous facilities belonging to two US-based businesses on New Year's Eve in Southern California. The operation resulted from the apprehension of suspects associated with an extremist group espousing anti-capitalist and anti-government ideologies.

Those Arrested Taken Into Custody During Isolated Dry Run

Four suspects were taken into custody last Friday in the remote area situated east of Los Angeles as they were according to officials practicing their proposed attack. Prosecutors presented aerial reconnaissance images to the media, which showed the suspects transporting a big black item to a surface. Law enforcement noted that the apprehensions took place before the individuals could put together a working explosive device.

Details of the Those Charged Disclosed

According to the submitted criminal complaint, the four individuals identified are Carroll, aged 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; Gaffield, 24; and Lai, 41. The group are reportedly from the LA vicinity.

Alleged Driving Force and Group Affiliations

Although officials did not clearly outline a rationale, they indicated the individuals are part of a faction dubbed the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This organization allegedly urges "workers to revolt and fight back against corporate power," as per the criminal complaint.

They face involve plotting and having a explosive. Officials indicated that further counts are expected in the coming weeks.

Particulars of the Supposed "Operation Midnight Sun"

Authorities said that one of the accused had created a meticulous plan last month to attack at least five business locations across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were characterized as "Amazon-type" fulfillment warehouses.

"This scheme was specific," an official said. "It laid out step-by-step instructions to construct explosive devices … and listed numerous sites across Orange county and Los Angeles."

As per the investigation and legal filings, the scheme called for positioning backpacks packed with intricate explosive devices that were set to be exploded simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at five sites. New Year's Eve was seen as an ideal time as the plan stated "pyrotechnics will be going off at this time so explosions will be harder to be heard."

The eight-page handwritten document, named "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," noted that further locations could be included. The facilities were described as property and facilities run by two separate firms involved in business involving commerce.

Long-term Schemes and Evidence Found

Court documents also revealed that two members in the collective had discussed future operations targeting immigration enforcement personnel and cars with explosives in 2026. One accused allegedly noted that such strikes "would take some of them out and scare the rest of them."

The plotting were reportedly planned both at an face-to-face assembly in Los Angeles and through an secure messaging app.

Photos included in the legal filings reveal a remote camp with what officials said were bomb-making items scattered on plastic folding tables.

Official documents notes that the group "all brought explosive materials to the location, such as different sizes of tubes, identified as a chemical compound, charcoal, charcoal powder, sulfur powder, and items to be used as detonators, and more."

The scheme also included directions on how to build the devices and how to not leave behind forensic clues that could be traced back to the individuals. The individuals had not long ago obtained precursor chemicals and other goods, including purchases from e-commerce sites.

Apprehension and Aftermath

Authorities intervened last week while the group were practicing the strike in the remote area near a desert community. "They had everything they needed to build an functional explosive device at that location," the attorney said.

In the course of executed searches, authorities allegedly located signs for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one accused's home that called for "America Must Fall", and "ICE Must Go". At another suspect's apartment, police located a version of the elaborate attack blueprint.

The individuals were taken into custody without a struggle. They were scheduled to make a court appearance in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
