Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have left a Washington summit without securing the long-desired long-range Tomahawk missiles from US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president stated following the cordial bilateral that he and Trump had talked about advanced missile systems, but chose to avoid public declarations on that topic "because the US administration wishes to prevent an intensification."

Trump's Stance on Missile Supply

While the US president did not rule out providing Tomahawks to Ukraine, his tone during the Washington meeting was non-committal.

"Hopefully Ukraine won't require them, ideally we can get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks," President Trump remarked, noting that America needed the weapons for its own security.

Trump acknowledged that providing the weapons would be "a significant escalation, but discussions will continue."

The Trump-Zelensky summit occurred just 24 hours following Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to hold face-to-face talks in Hungary in the near future.

Following the discussions, the US president used social media to urge Ukraine and Russia to "stop where they are" and conclude the conflict.

President Zelensky suggested that Ukraine could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in return for the Tomahawks, a proposal that prompted positive reactions from Trump.

When questioned if he was departing the US capital with greater optimism that his nation would get the Tomahawks, he said, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky believes that using Tomahawks to target Moscow's energy infrastructure would severely weaken Russia's military funding capabilities.
